Edmunds spotlight: No more Camry Hybrid. But they're all hybrids

A source of confusion for 2025 might be the discontinuation of the Camry Hybrid — at least as a model name. But in actuality, Toyota has made every Camry a hybrid, so there's no reason for differentiation anymore. The Camry comes standard with a four-cylinder engine paired to the automaker's latest hybrid system. The combination puts out 225 horsepower in front-wheel-drive models, representing a 17-hp improvement over the last-generation Camry Hybrid and a 22-hp bump over the outgoing non-hybrid four-cylinder. The Camry is also now available with an optional all-wheel-drive system that adds another electric motor to the rear and bumps power up to 232 horses. This powertrain change for 2025 does mean the previously available V6 engine is no longer available, however.

Competitors to consider

How does the Camry drive? We tested the Camry XSE with front-wheel drive. Acceleration is smooth and easy during everyday driving, and there's enough power on tap to get you moving when you need it. At the Edmunds test track, our test Camry sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, which is slightly quicker than the hybrid versions of the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata. The brakes are strong and smooth.

We are also impressed with the Camry's responsive steering and stable handling. Granted, we tested an XSE, which has a sport-tuned suspension, but overall you can expect the Camry to be secure when driving around corners.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Camry? The front seats in the Camry are a bit too firm for our liking. However, they do a great job of supporting your back on long trips and are generally very comfortable once you settle in on a long trip. The climate control system works very well with strong fan speed and a great auto setting.

Toyota dialed in the ride comfort just right on this new Camry. It doesn't feel floaty or disconnected from the road, but it soaks up bumps and dips without issue. The Camry stays nice and quiet in the cabin, even at highway speeds. The only major noise intrusion comes from the engine, which is gritty and unpleasant to listen to when you mash the gas.

How’s the interior? There's an immediate feeling that the Camry's interior took a few steps up with this new generation. Underneath the large touchscreen is a row of easy-to-use physical switches and knobs to control the car's climate system. The steering wheel buttons are a bit confusing at first but ultimately make sense after time.

Compared to some other midsize sedans, the Camry's driving position is pretty upright — almost too much so. This gives a more high-riding feeling with a great view over the hood and directly behind. Passenger space is solid in both rows, and the car's flat roofline means that headroom is good for everyone.

Technology

How’s the tech? Most Camry trims come with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen that features wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Overall, the device integration is among the best in the industry, including a wireless charging pad that actually seems to work and not just cook your phone. The optional nine-speaker JBL audio system sounds better than Toyota products of the last few years, but it still lags behind some rivals' Bose alternatives.

The real impressive stuff is with the driver aids. The Camry features the latest in Toyota safety tech and it is near flawless. The system can now sense when cars are coming in and out of lanes and can adjust speed accordingly. With the optional Traffic Jam Assist feature, you can also take your hands off the wheel at speeds of up to 25 mph when conditions allow.

Storage

How’s the storage? While the Camry has less cargo space in the trunk compared to the Sonata and Accord by the numbers, its 15.1 cubic feet is enough to handle a few large suitcases or a sizable grocery run. Small-item storage is fantastic in the Camry. There are a few different locations to store your phone, the door pockets can take on large water bottles, and the bin next to the wireless charging pad works great for keys.

If you need to install car seats for small children, LATCH anchors are located under clearly marked flaps and are close to the surface with nothing getting in the way. The rear bench is also wide and spacious enough that multiple seats should work fine. Just watch your head on the way in.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? Toyota says that a Camry can get 44 to 51 mpg in combined city/highway driving, depending on the car's configuration and trim. That makes the Camry one of the most efficient cars you can buy that's not a plug-in hybrid or full electric. On our standardized evaluation route, we observed 45.9 mpg from our front-wheel-drive XSE test car, which is just a bit less than Toyota's 47 mpg estimate and better than what we got from a hybrid Accord.

Is the Camry a good value? Toyota's decision to make every Camry a hybrid means you have plenty of trim levels to choose from if you want a hybrid. That's a different approach than, say, Honda, which reserves the hybrid version of the Accord for its most expensive trims. Overall, we think there's solid value in what you pay and the features you get. Toyota's warranty is average, though it does include two years/25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance and two years of roadside assistance.

Fun may not be the first thing that comes to mind when driving the Camry, but it's more than competent on a twisty road and there is now finally enough power to make a pass on the highway. From a design perspective, the new Camry is spicier than before. For a car that has never had much personality, Toyota is finally letting the Camry shine a bit.

Which Camry does Edmunds recommend?

We think the midgrade XLE model makes sense for most consumers. It comes with the larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen and some nice-to-have creature comforts, such as leather upholstery and heated front seats. The sporty SE will also appeal to some with its sharper styling and sport-tuned suspension, but the XLE is more comfortable and has important upgrades we think most shoppers will prefer.

Overview

Given its ubiquity on our roads, the introduction of an all-new Toyota Camry is unquestionably a Big Deal. Competing against midsize sedans like the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Kia K5, the ninth-generation 2025 Toyota Camry features an all-hybrid drivetrain lineup, refreshed styling inside and out, and a wide array of standard tech features, including standard advanced driver assist systems.

What's under the Camry's hood?

Toyota's commitment to hybrid drivetrains is on full display with the 2025 Camry, which now comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired to the automaker's latest hybrid system. The combination puts out 225 horsepower combined in front-wheel-drive models, representing a 17-hp improvement over the 2024 Camry Hybrid and a 22-hp bump over the last year's non-hybrid four-cylinder. It's also 21 more horsepower than the Honda Accord hybrid. Similar to the RAV4 Hybrid, the optional all-wheel drive adds another electric motor to the rear; in the Camry's case opting for AWD unleashes a total of 232 horses. The V6 engine is gone, so people intent on a hot-rod Camry will have to hit the used market.

Also part of the refresh are suspension tweaks, which Toyota says enhance responsiveness and agile handling. The SE and XSE trim levels get their own specific sport-oriented tuning.

How does the Camry drive?

Our first impression of the new Camry was a fully loaded XSE trim with front-wheel drive. It rode over ruts, lumps, and bumps with a smoothness and crispness that didn't exist in the previous car. It now feels as though the suspension deals with road imperfections in one stroke as opposed to jittering away for a while as it regains composure. It's comfortable too — impacts aren't felt so much as just heard, and they disappear as quickly as they came.

We were able to bring our XSE test car to the Edmunds test track. Here, it accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. That's slower than the 7-second sprint to 60 we recorded from the hybrid version of the Accord but a bit quicker than the last Hyundai Sonata we tested (8.3 seconds).

We were also impressed by how the Camry feels far more accurate and willing when initially turning into a bend. What that means is more driver confidence along curvy roads or when performing a sudden emergency swerve. The brakes inspire the same confidence with good pedal feel and a linear nature — the stopping is smooth, with no hybrid regenerative braking weirdness going on.

How's the Camry's interior?

The interior is where the old Camry was really showing its age. The new model looks more contemporary. Cabin material quality is pretty much the same, which is to say durable but unremarkable. Toyota does trim top-spec models in a soft vegan leather it calls SofTex. It's also on the doors and parts of the dash in the XSE trim. Other variants get a neat cloth design on the dashboard that helps break up the massive horizontal span of black plastic that links the screen and the rightmost air vent. The rest of the cabin is classic Camry, too. The controls are easy to reach and have a quality, almost Lexus-like feel to them.

In the name of comfort, Toyota redesigned the front seats with a new bottom cushion shape that's longer and uses a different foam density than before. The headrest has also been softened and moved a bit farther back. Top-spec XLE and XSE trims have noise-insulated glass for the windshield and the front door and the result is a big gain in auditory comfort. Wind noise is hushed at speed — it's now on a par with top-spec Honda Accords — tire noise is minimal and the four-cylinder engine is quieter.

How's the Camry's tech?

We're now a quarter of the way through the 21st century, and the Camry has the expected level of electronic doodads. The standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone functions are fully wireless, a wireless charging pad is included, and the standard 8-inch touchscreen grows to 12.3 inches on XLE and XSE trims. There are also five USB ports and dual Bluetooth phone connectivity. Other tech features include available in-car Wi-Fi with 4G connectivity for up to five devices and a digital key for XLE and XSE trims that allows you to use your smartphone as a key to lock, unlock and even start the car.

Every 2025 Camry comes with the Toyota Safety Sense group of driver assist systems, which includes automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, among other driver assist features. Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard. The Premium Plus package on XLE and XSE trims adds even more safety gear, including front cross-traffic alert and a 360-degree parking camera.

How economical is the Camry?

The most efficient 2025 Camry you can buy is the base LE trim with front-wheel drive. Thanks to 17-inch wheels and low-rolling-resistance tires, it gets an EPA-estimated 51 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The least-efficient Camry is the XSE with AWD at 44 mpg combined. These numbers are about the same as what the last Camry hybrid achieved, but Toyota points out that it achieved the same efficiency while adding more power and torque. The Camry also continues to get slightly better estimated mpg than the hybrid Honda Accord.
