Volvo YCC Concept
What's Special About It?
Designed by a team comprised entirely of women, the goal of the YCC (Your Concept Car) was to build a vehicle that satisfied the wants and needs of independent-minded female professionals. To that end, the YCC incorporates several innovative features that you're not likely to find on any of today's current cars.
Of paramount importance to the YCC team was easy access, hence the automatically activated gullwing doors and fold-down side sills that make for an easy step in. Once inside, the YCC was designed to automatically adjust itself to the driver's optimal seating position for better vision and comfort. Another feature that grabs attention is the YCC's lack of a conventional hood. The idea is that the driver would never need to bother looking inside as the YCC constantly monitors itself and alerts the driver when service is needed. There are also run-flat tires and easy-clean paint that resists dirt and debris to reduce time spent at the car wash.
The designers of the YCC decided to use the interior as a means of self-expression as the seats and floors can be outfitted with a choice of eight different mix-and-match patterns. Since most women admitted that they carried bags behind the seats, the second-row chairs stay folded up for added cargo room. There's also a sizable center console with multiple storage compartments that can swallow everything from a handbag to a laptop. Glance at the dashboard and the only information you see is speed, miles to empty and direction as all other information is consolidated into a central console to reduce unnecessary clutter.
What's Edmunds' Take?
Considering how much influence women yield over the average car purchase, it's surprising that it took this long for a major manufacturer to come up with a car like the YCC. Far from anything that could go into production soon, the YCC will most likely influence all Volvo designs from here on out. Ed Hellwig
