WASHINGTON — Volvo is recalling 350 2010-'11 XC90s because the power-steering fluid may leak, leading to a sudden loss of power steering, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The power-steering fluid may leak from the oil pipe connection at the steering gear valve housing," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "This condition could lead to a sudden loss of power steering, increasing the risk of a crash."
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Volvo said that the defect may result in slow leakage, generating noise and gradually decreased power steering assistance. It said the "root cause" of the problem is that "the supplier (ZF) has identified an assembly process issue (including influence of the operator) and a pipe geometry that is out of specification."
Volvo said it is still investigating the chronology of events and will submit a more detailed report to the federal government later.
Volvo dealers will replace the oil pipes on the power steering rack on the affected vehicles. The recall is expected to begin on May 31. Owners can contact Volvo at (800) 458-1552.
Inside Line says: If you own the aforementioned XC90, have it checked out with your dealer ASAP.

As always nothing is perfect my grandparents drive on these. I got to ride on it on a trip from LAand I got to say this is one of the best SUVs ever. I think Volvo has always very unappreciated. I wish everybody would stop buying Mercedes and BMW so much because they are becoming as common as Toyotas. Volvo lacks the Panache of other luxury brands but makes up for it in innovation and design. I also think Saab does not get enough attention. The swedish are great designers.
