ROCKLEIGH, New Jersey — In one of the more stunning price cuts in recent weeks, Volvo on Thursday announced a major price reduction on its 2009 XC90 models. The price cuts are in reaction to a major sales skid for the XC90.
Earlier this week, Ford reported that sales of the Volvo XC90 had dropped 64.4 percent in March 2009 versus March 2008. Volvo Cars of North America sold just 848 XC90 vehicles in March 2009, compared with 2,382 in March 2008. Total Volvo sales in the U.S. dropped 31.4 percent in March 2009 versus March 2008.
The price cuts apply to everything from the base 2009 XC90 3.2 to the top-of-the-line 2009 Volvo XC90 V8 AWD R Design, the automaker said. The base 2009 XC90 3.2 now starts at $37,850, including an $850 destination charge; previously it started at $41,095, including shipping. That translates to a savings of $3,245.
The top-of-the-line 2009 XC90 V8 AWD R Design now starts at $48,400, including destination; previously it started at $51,650, including shipping. That translates to a savings of $3,250.
"The decision to re-price the XC90 was taken to provide a strong value message to our customers," said Doug Speck, Volvo Cars of North America president and CEO.
