2005 Volvo XC90 V8
What's Special About It?
The XC90, Volvo's first SUV, will mark another Volvo first when it debuts with V8 power early next year. The new ultracompact 4.4-liter V8 engine is rated at 315 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Like all Volvo products, safety comes first, so the V8 is transversely mounted to prevent it from intruding on the XC90's frontal crumple zones. The engine's small size combined with its aluminum block and cylinder head make for a lightweight engine, an important factor in the SUV market where every mile per gallon counts.
The Volvo V8 is not only powerful, but it's also exceptionally clean, and is the only V8 to receive an ULEV II (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) rating. The four-valve engine uses continuous variable inlet and exhaust valve timing (CVVT) to adjust valve opening to best match the engine's current revs in order to use power and fuel most efficiently and ultimately lower emissions.
A new six-speed manually shiftable automatic is packaged with the V8. Both are controlled by Volvo's new Complete Vehicle Control (CVC) software which was developed to help the drivetrain components strike an optimal balance. Lastly, an electric all-wheel-drive system aids in maintaining traction and torque control.
What's Edmunds Take?
Currently only available with a five-cylinder or V6 engine, there's no doubt that as popular as the XC90 is in the United States, it still needed the option of V8 power to compete with other V8-equipped luxury SUVs like the Volkswagen Touareg and Lexus GX 470. Volvo has also made it easy for competitors to recognize a XC90 V8 without lifting the hood. V8 grille and tailgate badges, new 18-inch wheels, body color moldings, a graphite grille and dual exhaust pipes complete the new look. — Kelly Toepke
