WASHINGTON — Volvo is recalling 416 vehicles from model years 2000-'10 equipped with Garmin Nuvi 760 and 765 portable GPS navigation units because the batteries can overheat and lead to a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

    Volvo dealerships have sold these Garmin nav units as accessories. Potentially affected vehicles include the 2007-'10 Volvo C30, 2006-'10 Volvo C70, 2004-'10 Volvo S40, 2001-'09 Volvo S60, 2000-'10 Volvo S80, 2005-'10 Volvo V50, 2001-'10 Volvo V70, 2001-'10 Volvo XC70 and 2003-'10 Volvo XC90.

The batteries on those units may overheat," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "An overheated battery could lead to a fire."

Volvo issued a statement via NHTSA urging owners "to please stop using their Garmin portable GPS device immediately and visit the Garmin Web site to determine if their unit is affected."

The unit's battery will be replaced with a new battery and a spacer will be inserted on top of the battery next to the printed circuit board (PCB), it said.

The recall will begin in November. Until then, Garmin has a Web page where you can search by your unit's serial number to determine if it's part of the recall. Or, you can call Garmin at (866) 957-1981.
