WASHINGTON — Volvo is recalling 8,438 2010 XC60 vehicles because the driver's seatbelt could become detached from the seat frame in some side impact crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Volvo said it "has no reports of this condition occurring outside a laboratory environment," in documentation filed with the federal government.
"The driver's seat side cover panel (seat control panel) in certain driver-side impacts may release the attachment of the seatbelt to the seat frame," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Should this condition occur in a crash, the seatbelt may fail to properly restrain the occupants, increasing the risk of injury."
Volvo dealers will modify the inside of the driver-seat side cover panel. The recall is expected to begin on December 15. Owners can contact Volvo at (800) 458-1552.
Inside Line says: If you own the aforementioned Volvo XC60, have it checked out ASAP with your dealer. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
