GOTHENBERG, Sweden — Volvo will release a new R-Design package for its XC60 compact crossover at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The 2010 Volvo XC60 R-Design should begin reaching U.S. showrooms in spring 2010, a company spokesman told Inside Line.

The XC60 R-Design is more than just an appearance package. The car gets a beefed-up chassis with stiffer shocks and a quicker, more direct steering gear. Buyers can also opt for 20-inch Cratus five-spoke alloy wheels over the standard 18-inch rims.

Exterior modifications include a chrome-plated rear skid plate, twin chrome exhaust pipes and matte-silk-finish grille, door mirror housings and trim moldings. Volvo also has changed the lower side moldings from matte black to body color.

The cockpit features aluminum inserts in the center stack, steering wheel and doors, as well as aluminum pedals and a sport steering wheel and gearshift lever trimmed in perforated leather. The sculpted sport bucket seats can be ordered in off-black leather with beige inserts or vice-versa. The instrument panel houses blue "watch dial" gauges.

Inside Line says: A striking addition to the XC60 series. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
