GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Volvo has waved its R-Design wand over the XC60 and will formally unveil the results next month at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Production of the new Volvo XC60 R-Design for Europe begins in November.
As has been its practice, Volvo starts with a specially tuned sports chassis with stiffer damping, but ride height remains the same so the vehicle's off-road capability is not compromised. A more direct steering gear provides quicker response.
Exterior enhancements range from the functional — chrome-plated rear skid plate, side scuff plates — to the purely visual — twin chrome tailpipes and matte-silk metal-finish mirror housings and trim. Volvo also has scrapped the matte-black lower panels for body color. Buyers can choose from 18-inch five-spoke Cratus aluminum wheels or optional 20-inch alloy rims.
The designers spent plenty of time on the cockpit, trimming the gearshift lever and steering wheel in perforated leather and applying aluminum inserts in the steering wheel, center stack and door moldings. The brushed-aluminum sport pedals have rubber inserts for better grip, and the front sport bucket seats provide extra support and comfort.
Inside Line says: With the R-Design concept, Volvo strikes the right combination of performance and looks — with the emphasis on looks. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
