What's New for 2012: All Makes

2012 Volvo C30: The 2012 C30 is a carryover model with a few minor changes. Both the standard T5 and the T5 R-Design get new Premium Plus and Platinum options packages that replace the Multimedia and Preferred packages. The Premium Plus package includes a power sunroof, a power driver seat with memory, a power front passenger seat, LED daytime running lights and metallic interior trim. The Platinum package includes all the same features as the Premium Plus package but adds an upgraded audio system, navigation and satellite radio. In addition to the new options, all models get Bluetooth connectivity for both phone and audio, a rear-seat armrest and an alarm system. Lastly, Caspian Blue is a new exterior color.

2012 Volvo C70: Like the C30, the 2012 Volvo C70 is largely a carryover model with a few changes to its optional equipment. It drops the Multimedia and Convenience packages in favor of Premium Plus and Platinum packages. The Premium Plus package includes rear parking assist, a keyless ignition, HomeLink and an integrated compass in the rearview mirror. The Platinum package adds navigation and an upgraded audio system to the features found in the Premium Plus package. Bluetooth connectivity is now standard and Caspian Blue is a new exterior color.

    2012 Volvo S40: There is no S40 for 2012.

2012 Volvo S60: After a full redesign for 2011, the Volvo S60's only major change for 2012 is the addition of the T6 R-Design model. It features an upgraded 325-horsepower version of the standard T6's six-cylinder engine along with unique 18-inch wheels and a sport-tuned chassis. The R-Design also gets unique exterior design elements like revised front and rear spoilers, active xenon headlights, a rear diffuser, polished exhaust tips and metallic trim on the side mirrors and windows. Inside, the R-Design gets unique leather sport seats, metallic trim, a sport steering wheel, an R-Design shift lever and a blue instrument cluster. A power sunroof, power front passenger seat and sport pedals are also part of the package.

2012 Volvo S80: The S80 is largely a carryover model, but Volvo has redefined some of its options packages and added some new standard equipment. All S80s now feature Volvo's Sensus driver interface that adds a 7-inch display screen to the dashboard to enable control of the audio and navigation systems. Volvo's City Safe crash mitigation system is also standard along with new walnut interior trim, Bluetooth connectivity and LED side mirror indicator lights. A new Premium Plus options package includes HomeLink, front and rear parking assist, a keyless ignition and an integrated compass in the rearview mirror. The new Platinum package builds on the Premium Plus package with a navigation system, rearview camera and a premium audio system. The previously offered Inscription package now includes a leather-covered dashboard, while the Technology package has been upgraded with pedestrian detection and full auto brake during a collision warning. The Multimedia package is no longer offered and Biarritz Blue Metallic is a new exterior color.

    2012 Volvo V50: There is no V50 for 2012.

2012 Volvo XC60: This year's XC60 is a carryover model with a few minor package changes. The base XC60 3.2 gets a new Premier trim level that includes leather seating surfaces, laminated panoramic roof with two laminated glass panels and power sunshade, dark tint rear windows, silver roof rails and side window trim, aluminum inlay steering wheel, and a power passenger seat. Step up to the Premier Plus and add a power tailgate with programmable memory setting, front and rear park assist, a 12-volt power outlet in the cargo area, grocery bag holder, cargo cover, compass in rearview mirror, power-folding rear head restraints, HomeLink remote garage door opener, Personal Keyless Drive with Personal Car Communicator (PCC) and two-way car communication. The new Platinum level continues to build on the Premier Plus, adding Volvo's premium sound system and a navigation system with rear park assist camera. Premier, Premier Plus and Platinum trims carry over to the XC60 T6 AWD and XC60 T6 R-Design models.

    Volvo's XC60 T6 R-Design also gets a bump in output from its 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Horsepower jumps to 325 (from 300 hp) and 354 pound-feet of torque (from 325 lb-ft). The XC60 3.2 R-Design model has been discontinued.

2012 Volvo XC70: Like the rest of the Volvo lineup, the biggest changes to the XC70 are on its features and options list. First off, the Multimedia, Premium and Convenience packages have been deleted on all XC70 models. The base XC70 3.2 now comes standard with Volvo's City Safety crash avoidance system, a 7-inch Sensus dashboard display, Bluetooth audio streaming and metallic trim. The optional Premier package includes leather seats, a power front passenger seat, walnut interior trim, a power sunroof and tinted rear windows.

2012 Volvo XC90: The XC90 V8 has been discontinued while the rest of the lineup gets new options packages. The base XC90 3.2 now offers a Premium Plus package that includes active dual xenon headlights, a classic walnut gearshift knob, HomeLink, a grocery bag holder and an integrated compass in the rearview mirror. The Platinum package builds on the Premium Plus package with a premium sound system navigation and a rearview camera. Bluetooth connectivity is also standard equipment and Caspian Blue is a new exterior color. The XC90 3.2 R-Design gets Bluetooth, xenon headlights and new "Cratus" 20-inch wheels as standard and the same Premium Plus and Platinum options packages as the standard model. The multimedia and dynamic packages are no longer available on either model.

You people forgot the T5 S60 is new for 2012 - you know, the same one you have in your test fleet?

How about bringing the V60 plugin diesel hybrid in 2012 with over 100MPG Volvo?
I bet some of my California Prius friends would trade in a split second!
And you can sign me up for one too.

Where did Volvo go so wrong?  At the beginning of the millennium they were introducing an array of models... by 2009 they had nearly 10 models (C30, S40, V50, S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC60, and XC90). But now, that watershed moment is a distant memory.

As a niche brand, I find it hard to believe that Volvo's wagon buyers have disappeared. Yeah, Americans as a whole have shifted their focus to cute-utes, but then that leaves a concentration of quirky, family-oriented wagon buyers. The V50 and V70 fit those slots perfectly with stickers prices that undercut their competitors (A4 Avant, 3 Series & A6 and E-Class) while providing loads of safety features standard, and capable engines.

Volvo executives may argue that the company needs to adopt a mass-appeal product stategy (especially with Geely's goal of expanding production to 800,000 unit worldwide in the next decade) BUT... for that to ever happen, Volvo MUST embrace the rapid turnaround for redesigns that mass marketed auto brands follow.

The S80 essentially is eleven years old... the XC90 is about seven. That's absurd. Even Saab was replacing or updating models more frequently before GM tossed them aside.

My point: VOLVO has got to return to the bread and butter of their appeal. Acura ditched the charismatic coupes and sport sedans that differentiated their brand and look what happened to them? When in Rome, phone home. If Volvo will look back at their heritage they'll see what made them a staple brand and inject some of that ingenuity back into their cars.

Priced right and consistently with the S60 the V60 should sell really well even better than the XC70 if Volvo is concerned about having too many wagons they should discontinue the XC70.

Hope volvo changes their mind, if they bring the v60 R will be my next car

"The V60 is a beautiful car with genuine wagon utility, and we won't get it."
+1 - why not import this. Didn't Volvo make their stake in the US with wagons? Why not lead us back to them with good design and safety.

"What's new for 2012?"  Apparently not much!  Tweaking options and revamping packages simply won't cut it.  All the conventional wagons are gone, and the remaining line up consists primarily of gas hogs and/or dinosaurs.  The V60 is a beautiful car with genuine wagon utility, and we won't get it.  The XC60 and S60 are currently competitive and still look fresh, but that will only last so long.  The XC90 and S80 are already past their expiration dates, and Volvo put them back on the shelf with nary a package change.  Neglecting the American market would be a mistake with potential Saab-like consequences.
