U.S. pricing for the special models has not yet been determined, but Johnston said buyers can expect a price premium of "a couple thousand dollars." The 2008 Volvo V70 3.2 starts at $33,210, including a $745 destination charge. The Ocean Race editions come with a turbocharged 3.2-liter inline-6 engine that makes approximately 238 horsepower, linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. They are equipped with all-wheel drive.
Volvo Cars said it will limit the production run on the Ocean Race models to about 9,000 worldwide; the U.S. will be allotted 650 units. The appearance package bundles such items as unique Ocean Blue pearlescent paint, a new Volvo Ocean Race emblem and chrome exterior trim. The special models can also be ordered in Electric Silver exterior paint. The cabin gets Ocean Race leather upholstery and silk matte aluminum inlays.
Volvo draws heavily on nautical themes for this lineup. "Interior details echo the materials used in masts and rigs," said Lennart Stegland, Volvo Cars president of the special vehicles division. "The stitching on the upholstery traces its roots to sail making. The aluminum detailing on the mats resembles clews [the lower point of a sail], and the design of the unique wheels has been inspired by the movement of the ocean's waves."
The Swedish automaker says the Volvo Ocean Race takes "nearly nine months to sail 39,000 nautical miles of the globe's most treacherous seas."
