BEIJING — Volvo has begun selling the new S80L sedan as its flagship model in China. Featuring a wheelbase stretched by 5.5 inches, the S80L is being offered in five trim levels, with a higher level of standard equipment than the regular S80.

Designed specifically for the China market, the Volvo S80L features more rear-seat legroom and such amenities as a rear-seat refrigerator, rear-seat entertainment system, premium audio system and deeply padded leather seats.

The range-topping S80L 3.0 T6 AWD Prestige is equipped with an Alpine/Dynaudio sound system, electronic climate control system and air quality system. Safety equipment includes a blind-spot detection system, an intelligent driver information system and a personal car communicator.

The T6 gets Volvo's on-demand all-wheel drive, with an electrically controlled, hydraulically activated clutch. A turbocharged 285-horsepower 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine makes 295 pound-feet of torque and accelerates from zero to 60 mph in less than 7.2 seconds.

The S80L is aimed at affluent customers who prefer chauffeur-driven transportation. Among its chief competitors in China is the stretched-wheelbase Audi A6L.

Inside Line says: Look for the world's premium brands to offer more exclusive-to-China models like the S80L. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
