Volvo Rolls Out New Flexifuel Variants of 2008 S80 and V70

GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Volvo on Tuesday introduced its new, more performance-oriented versions of the 2008 Flexifuel S80 and V70, but don't expect to see them anytime soon in the U.S.

They're "not for this market," said Dan Johnston, spokesman for Volvo Cars of North America, in an e-mail message to Inside Line. However, Volvo's home office said on Tuesday that it also plans to roll out its Flexifuel lineup "in more countries across Europe."

The new versions of the Flexifuel S80 and V70 are equipped with a five-cylinder 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with a power output of 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The new Flexifuel vehicles are available with either a manual or automatic transmission. The Flexifuel cars can run on E85 bioethanol, gasoline or a combination of the two. The S80 and V70 have been available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Flexifuel engine since 2007.

The new Flexifuel models are being described by Volvo as "combining performance with environmental responsibility." The company also noted that it "would have been possible for Volvo Cars' engine experts to reach a power output above 200 hp. But extra power would require more fuel in the upper rev range — which in turn translates into considerably higher fuel consumption."

Volvo said it expects to sell around 20,000 Flexifuel cars in 2008.
