The full body cladding on this 2007 S80 prototype doesn't reveal much, but a close look at the front headlight area does show a slimmer design than the current version.

2007 Volvo S80 Flagship May Get V8

It's been quite awhile since Volvo's flagship received major upgrades, but the 2007 Volvo S80 looks as though it will have a whole new look when it debuts next year. Our spy pictures show a heavily camouflaged version undergoing hot-weather testing in the California desert. The full body camo covers most of the details although the overall shape and size are still easy to make out.

A slight peek at the front headlights reveals a slimmer, more angular design than the current car's squarish look. You can almost make out Volvo's distinctive design cues in the rear section of the car but even those lines appear to be toned down compared to the current car.

Our exclusive interior shot shows considerable changes to the cabin. The 2007 S80 looks as though it will convert to the slim panel, waterfall dash design that debuted in the S40. You can also clearly see the revised gauge cluster with floating needle gauges that move around small information screens in the center of the dial.

We also snagged a shot of what could be the long-rumored V8. Although most speculation has centered on the use of the same Yamaha unit used in the XC90, comparison of our spy photo with the XC90's V8 isn't conclusive. Given the tight confines of the S80's transverse engine arrangement, the narrow-angle Yamaha V8 seems like a logical fit but we'll have to wait for further details before making any firm conclusions.
