2002 Volvo S80 75th Anniversary Edition
What's special about it?
Volvo is celebrating the 75th birthday of its first car, the Jakob (funny, it doesn't look a day over 60. Volvo threw a hell of a hootenanny in Times Square, too. They know how to party, those Swedes). To commemorate the occasion, the company made revisions to its flagship sedan, the S80, and made it a veritable Shangri-La for rear-seat passengers. For starters, special door hinges allow for a wider door opening in order to access the rear seat, which has been moved aft to create more legroom; the wheelbase remains the same length. Coddling the backseat denizens is Executive Leather upholstery, which was a dark cream with black binding trim that reminded us of the previous-generation BMW 750iL (oh, those days when the 7 Series was good-looking!). Their buns can be toasted thanks to seat heaters, or if the sun threatens to harm their fair faces, electrically powered blinds can instantly be deployed.
For the executive with a short attention span, a rear-seat entertainment system may be ordered. Dual 7-inch screens are integrated into the back of the front headrests, which means that each passenger can choose her own form of diversion, whether it be a DVD, television or a video game. Another option is a refrigerator in the rear center armrest, replete with a storage cabinet mounted in the rear hat shelf to hold Baccarat champagne flutes. The Special Edition S80 can be distinguished by the body-colored bumpers and moldings.
Why should you care?
If you've been searching for the ultimate in ferrying around passengers, the Volvo S80 is a smart, sensible alternative to other fullsize luxury sedans as the Lincoln Town Car, Lexus LS 430 or the Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas. Plus, with two separate screens for the entertainment system, there's less of a chance of slap fights between bored carpoolers. -- Liz Kim
