WASHINGTON — Volvo is recalling 7,558 2012 S60s because, under certain driving conditions, there may be engine hesitation and possible engine stall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The software for the fuel pump units may not be compatible with all fuel pumps and components, resulting in insufficient fuel transfer in the pump unit," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Under certain driving conditions, there may be engine hesitation and possible engine stall even though the fuel gauge indicates up to 1/4 of fuel left in the tank. This condition increases the risk of a vehicle crash."
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Volvo said it is not aware of any reports alleging injuries, fatalities or crashes related to this condition. Volvo said it has received 23 U.S. warranty claims for this problem.
Volvo dealers will upgrade the engine control module software to fix the problem. The recall is expected to begin on June 17. Owners can contact Volvo at 1-201-768-7300.
