Small Volvo Is On The Way

Volvo has done well for itself by manufacturing and marketing safe cars for the American market. Sales have been on the rise, and for the first time in its history, Volvo has captured 1.1 percent of passenger car sales in the US.

Volvo intends to continue the trend as evidenced by the unveiling of the S40 sedan and V40 wagon at the New York International Auto Show this week. The cars are particularly significant for Volvo, because Volvo does not currently have a model with which to combat the entry-level BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Saab 900. The S40/V40 changes that, offering potential Volvo buyers a compact sedan or wagon with a zippy 160-horsepower engine.

Volvo executives believe that the S40/V40 will bring a different type of customer into showrooms. Ideally, this person will be a younger customer who may not otherwise think of looking at a Volvo because of its suburban family image. The S40 sedan and C70 coupe and convertible might be just what Volvo needs to capture the pre-family buyers that have long overlooked this Swedish carmaker.
