WASHINGTON — Volvo is recalling 12,303 of its 2007-'08 S80 and 2008 XC70 and V70 vehicles because a software problem may cause the windshield wipers to malfunction, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The diagnostic software in the central electronic module may cause a malfunction of the windshield wiper functionality," according to NHTSA's recall summary of the problem. "If this condition occurs, the windshield wipers may not operate when activated; or in certain cases, the windshield wipers may activate when not switched on.
"Operating a motor vehicle during inclement weather conditions without functioning windshield wipers can increase the risk of a crash."
Volvo dealers will inspect the central electronic module and upgrade the software for free. The recall is expected to begin in May. Owners can contact Volvo at (800) 458-1552.
Inside Line says: If you own one of the aforementioned vehicles, have it checked out ASAP with your dealer. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
