IRVINE, California — Volvo Cars of North America says it will introduce a limited-edition 2008 C30 R-Design in the second quarter of this year. The Swedish automaker says the special model, which blends "sporty and premium" styling cues, will be limited to a run of 400 units, with prices to be announced closer to the car's launch date.

The C30 R-Design is primarily an appearance package using the same turbocharged 227-horsepower T5 five-cylinder as the regular production C30. Cosmetic enhancements include a matte silver finish for the outside mirror housings and front grille trim, as well as R-Design badging. The special model gets tricked out with a sport body kit, tailgate spoiler and large-diameter exhaust tips. Exterior color choices include Black Sapphire, Titanium Grey, Orinoco Blue and Passion Red.

The cabin gets such touches as a blue-face instrument cluster, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with aluminum inlays, sport pedals, sport shifter and floor mats.

Options include a five-speed Geartronic transmission, DVD-based navigation system with real-time traffic, power driver seat, climate package, power glass moonroof, bi-xenon headlights, Serapis alloy wheels and a Dynaudio premium sound system.

Volvo says the special model is inspired by its "high-performance R models."

What this means to you: More glitz than get-up-and-go with this limited-edition C30 model. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
