    What's special about it?
Impressive is one word to describe the Volvo Adventure Concept Car 2 (ACC2), all the more so because it has been developed to demonstrate that the existing Cross Country has an exciting future.

Cabin design is what inspires us to use the word impressive when discussing the ACC2. Drawing on cues from the famous Swedish Ice Hotel and the Swiss Army Knife, Volvo has blended cold steel and aluminum surfaces, warm saddle-style leather and smart functionality into an intoxicating environment for the high-tech enthusiast.

The 2+2 seating configuration makes for an intimate interior, but thin seat design inspired by Scandinavian wooden chairs and racing car seats creates ample space for four occupants. The rear backrests move forward to create a large, spacious cargo area with a flat load floor. Woolen floor carpeting is water-resistant and soft to the touch, while orange dash lighting contributes to a warm, rosy cabin ambience. Orange coloring is used throughout the ACC2 to highlight interaction between man and machine.

As expected with a Volvo, safety features abound. There is a Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), a Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and four-point CrissCross safety belts for each occupant. Integrated into the front doors are a first-aid kit and a toolbox.

On the technology front, the center console is characterized by Volvo as a "utility belt" including docking facilities for a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), digital camera and digital video camcorder. The PDA has a telephone and a GPS system built-in, as well as an SOS system in case you get lost or trapped in the wilderness. It can even pre-warm the car from a distance if the weather turns foul while on the trail, so the ACC2 is toasty-warm when you arrive. For entertainment, the ACC2 includes a rear video screen as well as MP3 and DVD players.

This is a high-performance sport-activity vehicle, according to Volvo, one designed for the demanding winter adventurer. As such, a stout 2.4-liter 300-horsepower inline five-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automanual transmission whose gear-change buttons are located on the steering wheel powers the ACC2. A FOUR-C (continuously controlled chassis concept) suspension and electronically controlled all-wheel drive are also standard.

The exterior is familiar, barely disguising the V70 station wagon that resides beneath the Machine Silver paint, flared wheel arches, black-tinted taillights and orange bumper accents. The track is also wider, and 18-inch Michelin tires are studded and offer run-flat technology. Interestingly, the headlights are connected to the GPS system so that they can account for right- or left-side traffic.

    Why should you care?
With the impending arrival of the performance-oriented Infiniti FX45 crossover SUV, don't bet that Volvo will be resting on its laurels. A production version of the ACC2 would be relatively easy to produce, since most of the hardware is based on existing equipment. — Christian J. Wardlaw
