VW iPhone App on 2010 Dakar Rally Keeps Users up to Speed

WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen on Friday helped to rev up coverage of the upcoming 2010 Dakar Rally with word that it has launched a new iPhone application in time for the event. Dubbed "Volkswagen Rally mobile — 2010 Dakar," the application is available in Apple's online store now.

The new application will keep users informed of the five Race Touraeg vehicles participating in the off-road classic. The 2010 rally runs through Argentina and Chile, running twice across the Andes Mountains and the Atacama desert. One could argue that the name "Dakar" is a trifle misleading, then.

"Rally mobile" will provide daily reports and quotes, as well as daily video summaries of the stages that last about 3 minutes, said Volkswagen in a statement. Another key feature is an interactive overview of the Race Touareg 2.

Actually, the NHRA had this last season. You can see round-by-round drag racing results in real time. Really slick. I downloaded it in the stands at the year-end Pomona event and was using it within 5 minutes. Cost $5, but worth every penny. I'll be able to run the app every race weekend from home and follow each event.

This Dakar app will be really cool. I like the event and follow it as much as I can. In the time it took to write this, I downloaded it into my iPod and now it's mine. But I may dump it if I find one that follows the whole race more objectively, without being VW-centric. That's the price one pays for "free", apparently.
