WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen has added a five-door version of its Up! minicar in Europe, as it continues to extend the range of what the automaker calls its New Small Family.

The five-door Up! joins the original three-door variant that was unveiled last fall at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, as well as such European cousins as the Skoda Citigo.

The Up! five-door goes on sale in Germany in May, priced from $13,400, and will reach other European markets by early summer. The three-door model starts at just under $13,000.

VW said it expects half of all Up! buyers to choose the five-door, which shares its underpinnings, including powertrains, with the Up! three-door.

Inside Line says: VW adds another building block to its rapidly expanding small-car family.

I want a 3-door up! here, I think it's such a cute / sharp looking little car and if it's $13,000 in Germany with something like 24% VAT added, then it'd be one of the cheapest cars in the states.  I think it'd be a great car for city dwellers or folks who don't car, or people like me who will bring it to redline before every shift because it only makes 60 HP.
