Volkswagen Shows Off Touran Fuel-Cell Prototype in San Francisco

    1 Rating
SAN FRANCISCO — As part of a move to "intensify its investigation of alternative drive technologies," Volkswagen is presenting its Touran HyMotion compact van, a fuel-cell prototype, at the World Environment Day event here through June 5.

Organizers of the event say it is the world's largest presentation of vehicles featuring fuel-cell-drive systems. The HyMotion is one of 23 fuel-cell-driven vehicles on display.

The HyMotion gets its energy from a combination of fuel cell and electric battery. It can accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour in 14 seconds. It has a top speed of 88 miles per hour, which is made possible by a second power source in the form of a nickel-metal-hydride battery that provides the Touran with extra power.

World Environment Day is taking place for the first time in the U.S. It is a platform for cutting-edge technologies.

What this means to you: VW joins an ever expanding group of auto companies showcasing the future possibilities of hydrogen technology. The more developers working on the concept, the sooner it will become a feasible reality.
