WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen has developed a new Race Touareg 3 for the 2011 Dakar Rally. While the vehicle is slated to be publicly unveiled later this year, VW has released a teaser shot of the front end.
VW describes the latest iteration of its successful racer as an "evolution model" that sports a "new design [and] proven technology." Indeed, the German automaker has come up a winner for the past two years, since the race has shifted to South America.
For the 2011 event, which kicks off January 1 and will be staged again in Argentina and Chile, VW plans to field four vehicles, all with the new Race Touareg 3 shell over mechanicals that are little changed from the Touareg 2. Power comes from a 300-horsepower TDI engine.
Inside Line says: VW will give its new Race Touareg 3 a serious torture test in September at the Silk Way Rally in Russia, as a prelude to the Dakar Rally. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
