2004 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI
What's Special About It?
Volkswagen had always promised that a powerful and fuel-efficient V10 turbodiesel version of the Touareg would join the U.S. model lineup in mid-2004, and the company delivered at Detroit's Cobo Center.
The 5.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine under this VW's hood is rated for 310 horsepower and an amazing 553 pound-feet of torque. Climbs up steep mountain passes, even with a trailer hitched to the back, are sure to be a breeze in the Touareg TDI. Actual towing capacity remains at 7,716 pounds the same as on V6 and V8 Touaregs. This isn't due to any weakness of the engine, rather the limitations of this SUV's unibody design. Fuel mileage estimates are 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway not bad for a vehicle carrying a full load of off-road mechanicals.
What's Edmunds' Take?
With a base price of $57,800, buying a Touareg TDI is not an inexpensive prospect. Still, if you love the idea of a refined and versatile luxury SUV that blows past muscle cars without blowing your bank account at the gas station, this may be the one for you. Erin Riches
