TOKYO NEWS: Volkswagen Debuts 69-mpg "EcoRacer" Sports Car

TOKYO — Volkswagen unveiled its carbon-fiber EcoRacer prototype, which boasts a top speed of 143 mph and gets 69 miles per gallon, this week at the international auto show here. The concept was designed to "serve as a technology test bed," the German automaker said.

The company describes the carbon-fiber EcoRacer as a "coupe, a roadster and a speedster all in one." The prototype is powered by a future 1.5-liter, turbodiesel, direct-injection engine that makes 134 horsepower. The EcoRacer goes zero to 62 mph in 6.3 seconds, VW says.

The car's flexibility to morph among body styles is due to a combination of elements. The entire T-bar roof, as well as the rear hatch, is removable. The frame of the windshield can be exchanged for a module with a short racing windshield. As soon as a door is opened, the roof wing above it swings up for easy access.

The lightweight EcoRacer weighs 1,874 pounds and is 148.4 inches long, 47.6 inches high. It is fitted with 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

What this means to you: VW gets credit for working on giving enthusiasts everything: a hot car that gets excellent gas mileage.
