GUANGZHOU, China — Shanghai Volkswagen, a joint venture between the German automaker and China's Shanghai Auto, has unveiled a modestly face-lifted Volkswagen Tiguan at the 2009 Guangzhou Auto Show. The locally assembled Tiguan goes on sale in China next February, priced starting at around $27,800.
Changes between the China-built Tiguan and the versions sold in Europe and North America are minor: They amount to a new grille and a mildly reworked front bumper.
In China, the Tiguan will be offered initially in three variants, including front- and all-wheel-drive 1.8 TSI and all-wheel-drive 2.0 TSI. An entry-level front-wheel-drive 1.4 TSI will be added later in the year.
Prices in China are expected to range up to $44,000.
Inside Line says: One of the Chinese names being considered for the locally produced Tiguan is Tuhuan — Happy Journey. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
