    Just the Facts:
    • Volkswagen Tiguan compact crossover gets a midcycle freshening, but few major mechanical changes.
    • The revised Tiguan now looks more like its newer siblings, with a fresh face and revamped tail.
    • VW is keeping the Tiguan's base price unchanged in Europe.

WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen has released the first images of its face-lifted 2012 Tiguan, weeks ahead of the compact crossover's public unveiling at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show.

The revised Tiguan now looks more like its newer siblings, with a fresh face and revamped tail. The front end features new LED headlamps, grille and front fascia, with LED taillamps and a revised rear bumper.

Powertrains are expected to be carried over with few major changes.

VW dealers have begun taking orders for the new model already in Germany, where the company reports the Tiguan is sold out. Nonetheless, VW said it plans to keep the base price unchanged in its home market, where the Tiguan starts at around $33,000.

Still missing is a regular 4-cyl, non-turbo, gasoline engine that doesn't require premium fuel.

Note the Tiguan pictured here is a TDI...Any rumblings for US market?

I really have to laugh at all the remarks about the new Volkswagen's being boring and tasteless.

The new design is very clean, classy and simple. Very much like Audi's line-up. I think these cars will age very very well.

I would feel comfortable saying that if you put the tiguan up against almost any crossover it competes with, this would be the preferred choice by all.

The only real hurdle is of course, the price. You can get a Ford escape ( and if you like the design of that your bonkers ! ) for significantly less and a "pick your part" style menu of features and options. If the Tiguan was a bit cheaper, you would see far more of them, guaranteed.

Volkswagen is doing everything right, except for the Jetta ... drum brakes ?

The VW 2.0T and Audi 2.0T are not the same engine.  HP ratings are similar, but the Audi mill cranks out far more torque, or "torques" as our friends on Top Gear would say.

The Tiguan already has the 2.0T...  It looks worse refreshed.  Boring, conservative and unremarkable.  VWs used to (a year ago-30 years ago) look good, handsome and interesting.  VW is ruining themselves while they try to become #1.  I'd rather make good cars than sell a lot of them...

So no Audi 2.0 turbo, and no 8-speed auto?  I guess we'll have to see what the Q3 offers.  I hope they get that one right.
