NEW DELHI — Volkswagen will display 10 new models at the Indian showcase Auto Expo 2008, headlined by the Up! concept and the new Tiguan SUV. The automaker says it plans to sell 110,000 cars per year in India starting next year, after its new plant in Chakan in western India, goes online.

VW India President Jörg Müller announced that VW will begin India sales of the Jetta this summer and the Phaeton later in 2008. Right-hand-drive versions of both cars will be on display at Auto Expo, along with the RHD Passat and Touareg that are already on sale here. The Jetta will be built in India, but the ultra-luxury Phaeton will be an import.

The big news in this region where ultra-cheap cars are on the horizon: VW says it will bring out a Polo-based small car in 2010 in India. No specifications or price details were given. India's Tata Motors is set to unveil its sub-$2,500 "people's car" this week at the show.

What this means to you: VW is wise to spread into this fast-growing market at both the Phaeton and Polo ends. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
