Teased: Volkswagen's New Midsize Sedan To Enter Production in 2011

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee — Volkswagen has released a sketch of the first VW model that will be produced at its new U.S. factory under construction in Tennessee. The car, known internally as New Midsize Sedan, or NMS, is slated to go into production in early 2011.

The NMS will be about the size of the Passat but will be priced lower. It is being developed specifically for North America but eventually could be built and sold in other markets.

The car is expected to go on sale in the U.S. in spring 2011, most likely as a 2012 model.

Inside Line says: The current European-built Passat has gotten pricey, and VW wants to increase sales volume by undercutting the big hitters (Honda Accord and Toyota Camry) on price. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
