WASHINGTON — Volkswagen is recalling 18,500 2009 VW Routan minivans because an omission in the owner's manual did not mention that objects should not be placed over or near the airbag on the instrument panel, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The owner's manual was printed without the required information explaining that no objects should be placed over or near the airbag on the instrument panel," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "Any such objects could cause injury to the vehicle's occupants in the event of a crash severe enough to cause the airbag to inflate."

Volkswagen dealers will send an owner's manual insert containing the required airbag information for owner installation or dealers will install it in the event the owner prefers assistance from the dealer. The recall is expected to begin on or before July 31.

Routan owners can contact Volkswagen at 800-822-8987.

Inside Line says: If you own a Volkswagen Routan, you'll get some updated information for your owner's manual shortly. In the meantime, remove those stuffed animals from the dash. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

A missing page in the manual , is not a recall.
