WASHINGTON — Volkswagen is recalling 15,902 2009 Routan vehicles in the U.S. because a fire could occur within the rear sliding door, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall is related to a recent recall of the 2008-'09 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans for a similar issue, according to Volkswagen documentation filed with the federal government.
The affected Routan vehicles "may have been built with an improper [sic] routed wire harness that may have a condition where the lower sliding door hinge bracket can make contact and wear through the wire insulation," according to NHTSA's recalls summary of the problem. "Contact with a 12V power feed circuit within the harness may cause a high resistive short circuit within the latch mechanism located inside of the sliding door.
"This could result in an overheated latch and a fire within the rear sliding door could occur."
Volkswagen dealers will inspect the sliding door wire track assembly and the sliding door power drive unit wire assembly for damage and repair/replace as necessary. The recall is expected to begin in June. Owners can contact Volkswagen at (800) 822-8987.

Different interior on rear styling also. I would find it hard to buy one over the Superior Town and Country though

considering that Chrysler sold over 10 million Minivans since 1984 this recall is really nothing much! It was a rapid & open recall and it's being fixed quickly. I'll still buy anoother Chrysler minivan, as my 2 previous ones have lasted for over 180,000 trouble free miles!

That's funny since the Routan is just a Chrysler Town & Country Van with a different front clip!
