What is it?
2000 Volkswagen Passat 4Motion
What's special about it?
When the new Passat first arrived on American shores, Volkswagen said an all-wheel-drive version would be coming. It didn't quite make it for 1999, but here it is for 2000. 4Motion is VW's term for the same all-wheel-drive system found in Audi quattro vehicles. In normal driving conditions, the drive ratio is 50 percent to the front and 50 percent to the rear. On low-grip surfaces, the wheels with the higher level of adhesion receive more of the power. The Passat 4Motion comes standard with a V6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission. It will be available in dealerships by February 2000.
Why should you care?
Volkswagen has had this technology available to European markets for at least a year. It's about time it was offered to American consumers.
