    What is it?
2002 Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo S

    What's special about it?
We've already driven the most powerful Beetle (we thought that was Paul McCartney — ha ha — Check out our First Drive), but we thought we'd show it to you anyway. Currently available at your local showroom, the Turbo S is powered by VW's 1.8-liter engine capable of 180 horsepower. Mated to a six-speed automatic tranny, the Beetle should be able to zoom from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds.

The Beetle is equipped with a stability control system, a first for Volkswagen cars. While the slightly stiffer suspension tuning may appeal to driving enthusiasts somewhat, the portly Beetle will more likely attract fashionistas and extroverts.

Integrated foglamps, new turn signals and a spoiler marks the subtle changes for the front, while a Turbo S badge and dual chrome exhausts deck the rear. The speedy Bug rides on 17-inch rubber, while inside, you'll find brushed metal accents on the pedals and around the cabin.

    Why should you care?
Love the rotund-ness of the New Beetle, but want a little more zing for the driving experience? The Turbo S trim level just may be your thing. VW plans to sell 5,000 of this flavor, with a price of $23,400. — Liz Kim
