WASHINGTON — Volkswagen is recalling 30,294 2011 Jettas in the U.S. because a port-installed stainless steel exhaust tip may pose a burn hazard, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"Some vehicles had a stainless steel exhaust tip installed at the port during importation," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "These exhaust tips may extend beyond the original length of the factory-installed exhaust pipes. It is possible for inadvertent contact to occur with a person's leg. If the tailpipe extension is hot during inadvertent contact, a burn could occur."
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Volkswagen said it has received complaints of burns resulting from Volkswagen accessory stainless steel exhaust tips.
In one formal complaint lodged with the NHTSA, an unidentified woman said she suffered such a burn.
"While the vehicle was parked, the contact was removing an item from the trunk when she was burned on the calf of her left leg by the muffler," said the complaint, which was posted on the NHTSA Web site. "The contact had to go to the doctor for the burn."
Volkswagen dealers will replace the stainless steel exhaust tips. The recall is expected to begin in November. Owners can contact Volkswagen at (800) 822-8987.
