AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Although we relayed some preliminary information to you back in April about the upcoming 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, VW's U.S. media Web site still hasn't posted any official details or images. Fortunately, the company's retail site has lots of information on the new car, including the upcoming TDI variant.

Due to begin arriving at VW dealers this summer, the '09 Jetta SportWagen will offer a choice of three engines. The gasoline power plants include a 2.5-liter five-cylinder rated at 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque on the Jetta SportWagen S and SE variants, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 200 hp and 207 lb-ft on the Jetta SportWagen SEL. The diesel is a 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder rated at 140 hp and 236 lb-ft.

VW will offer a five-speed manual gearbox on the base SportWagen S 2.5 and a six-speed manual on the SportWagen SE, SEL and TDI models. A six-speed Tiptronic automatic is available on the five-cylinder, while the turbo four-cylinder gas and diesel will offer a six-speed DSG dual-clutch box.

The Jetta SportWagen S 2.5 gets EPA fuel economy ratings of 21 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway. The TDI is rated at 30/41 city/highway — significantly less than consumers' earlier expectations.

The performance specs are not overwhelming. The base 2.5 model with five-speed manual lopes from zero to 60 mph in a leisurely 8.4 seconds, while the SEL with the turbo 2.0 gas engine and DSG box makes the sprint in 6.9 seconds.

VW has yet to release performance figures or pricing on the TDI, which appears to be a late entry. But the company's Web site says the Jetta SportWagen S will start at $19,649, including a $650 shipping charge, while the SE will be priced from $21,999. The turbocharged SEL is priced from $26,640 for the six-speed manual and $27,740 for the six-speed DSG.

Options include a new power panoramic sunroof ($1,300), DVD navigation ($1,990), alloy wheels ($450) and an iPod adapter ($199).

What this means to you: Despite the delays and disappointing mileage figures, the new Jetta SportWagen promises to be a hit with U.S. customers. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
