LAS VEGAS — Forget those European-flavored catchphrases like "Bluetec" and "BlueMotion." Volkswagen of America wants U.S. consumers to think only of "clean diesels" when they hear the acronym TDI.

At the 2007 SEMA Show today, VW has unveiled its 2009 Jetta TDI SportWagen, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection diesel — TDI for short — under the hood. The engine makes 140 horsepower and an ample 235 pound-feet of torque.

For the show, VW has fitted H&R springs to lower the ride height, as well as Brembo brakes and Yokohama performance tires mounted on 19-inch Sportec alloy wheels. The whole thing is finished off in custom paint and graphics.

VW continues the fast-family theme with its 2008 Passat Wagon Hi-Def styling package, which bundles Hella lights, Nitto performance tires and 18-inch Velos wheels with Recaro child seats. Under the hood is a 200-hp 2.0-liter TFSI gas engine. And that one's clean, too.

What this means to you: Yes, the Jetta TDI is clean, but the ultra-modern turbodiesel is also plenty powerful.
