What is it?
2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
What's special about it?
Volkswagen brings back the GLI trim level for the Jetta for the first time in about a decade. Jetta's been going upscale as of late, and a fully loaded GLX can run upwards of $24,000. That's pretty far from its humble upbringing. The GLI incorporates all the driving enthusiast aspects of the GLX minus some of the luxury features to save a couple of grand.
What'll you get? The VR6 engine will stir up 200 ponies and 195 pound-feet of torque. The GLI will come only with a six-speed manual transmission, so sludge box fans need not apply. A stability control system will also be a part of the standard equipment.
Visually, dual exhausts with chrome tips add a saucy flair, while 17-inch alloy wheels and GLI badging tell the world that you're more into performance than opulence. Cloth sport seats; leather trim for the shift knob, boot and handbrake; as well as a three-spoke leather steering wheel round out the special trim level.
Why should you care?
Volkswagen understands that drivers would like the power of a V6 without expensive goodies like rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, leather seats, self-dimming rearview mirrors and wood trim. It's a nice option to have. — Liz Kim
