2009 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Volkswagen GTI

WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen will display the final production version of the redesigned Golf GTI at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show next month. The new GTI was displayed in near-production "concept" guise last fall at the 2008 Paris Auto Show.

As with the standard Golf VI, the GTI's basic shape has undergone only evolutionary changes. In Europe, the GTI will be offered in both three- and five-door variants.

Power will come from a 208-horsepower turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, with 0-to-60-mph acceleration in less than 7.2 seconds and top speed electronically limited to 149 mph.

The new GTI goes on sale in Europe this spring, after the Geneva show.

Inside Line says: The hardware changes are pretty modest beneath the new skin. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
