- A one-off GTI Cabrio concept is joined by a Golf R Cabrio that is described by the German automaker as "the fastest open Golf ever."
- VW is said to be evaluating the Golf R Cabrio for possible production in 2012.
- No word yet on VW's plans for a production version of the GTI Cabrio.
WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen is wrapping up an eventful week at its annual GTI Meet in Worthersee with a brace of hot Golf convertible concepts — the one-off GTI Cabriolet and the even-hotter Golf R Cabrio.
The soft-top Golf twins, both based on the recent redesigned Golf Cabrio, join the GTI Edition 35 that was unveiled earlier this week at Worthersee.
The Golf R Cabrio boasts a tweaked turbo 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 267 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. VW says 0-60 acceleration takes less than 6.0 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.
The Golf R Cabrio has its suspension lowered by an inch and is fitted with 235-series performance tires on 19-inch Talladega rims, as well as 17-inch brakes with vented discs and blue painted calipers.
The cockpit is trimmed in carbon fiber, aluminum and nappa leather, and features drilled aluminum pedals and aluminum sill plates with piano-black inlays.
VW released images, but no details on the GTI Cabrio, which gets a unique front bumper and gloss-black lip spoiler, GTI grille with red accents, rear diffuser with honeycomb grille, twin exhaust pipes, gloss-black side sills and wheel arches shrouding new five-spoke alloy rims.

The black wheels on the GTI cabrio are fantastic looking, in my opinion. VW should make them standard on all '12 GTIs.

This is a nice car. I understand that VW is not bring it to the US. I hope they change their mind. The Golf Cabrio is much nicer looking than the Eos.

I'll take either. Much more handsome than the Eos, top up or down. Also VW: bring the Scirocco. Too expensive? Build it here, yo.
Related: There's 2 VWs. The cool one over where beers are served by the litre. And the wonky one, where new Jettas look like 1998 Camrys.

wagonguy1 the 128i and the EOS are just as feminine in my book... but hell I'm buying a used Miata when I need a set of wheels again, and I'd consider a Turbo Beetle if the price is right.

Golf is what VW makes best IMO. Now, only to get rid of wrong wheel drive...

Of course if you had brought over the Sirocco I'd be driving a VW today.

Nice "man" convertible VW. I couldn't bring myself to buy and EOS and last month I got a BMW 128i instead. Since it looks like the next generation Beemers will be 4 bangers...this might be my next car. I've had three VWs and an Audi and I've enjoyed them all.
