Kate Middleton's VW Golf for Sale on eBay

BUCKLEBURY, England — Just how taken is the public with Kate Middleton, the new Duchess of Cambridge? A speculator in the United Kingdom is about to find out.

Sonny Brazil, the 21-year-old son of a British car salesman, has put the former commoner's 2001 indigo blue Volkswagen Golf up for sale on eBay. It's the car Middleton bought as a student to tool around St. Andrews University in Edinburgh, a few months after she and Prince William became friends.

She paid $17,500 back in 2001. Now Brazil hopes to fetch $50,000 or more for it. He started the eBay bidding at $32,225 on the Golf because of its royal history; as of Tuesday, bids had already reached $38,000, but the reserve still had not been met. The Golf will remain up for auction here until July 24.

It seems the princess is organized. Brazil also is including the log book and all of the receipts for work done on the car. They show Middleton, who put on 60,000 miles, had a few run-ins, as she replaced an outside mirror in 2003 and had a broken headlight fixed in 2006.

Furthermore, London's Daily Mail reports that a warden slapped a fine on the car in 2003 and that Middleton argued with a parking attendant after he issued her a ticket while the car was parked outside her flat in January 2007.

A month later, the VW Golf was then handed over to Middleton's brother James, just before it was revealed that Kate and William had split up. Rumors circulated that Middleton wanted to get rid of everything that reminded her of Prince William and decided she no longer wanted to drive it.

James Middleton sold the vehicle in 2009 for $2,300, to Al Brazil of Motor Carriage Co., who gave it to his son. The younger Brazil found a pair of cufflinks in the vehicle and had considered including them in the eBay auction, but now says he plans to return them to the Middleton family.

"It's amazing to think I only paid about 1,400 pounds for the car and now it's worth far more than that," he told the Daily Mail.
