WOLFSBURG, Germany — Following its Geneva auto show debut, the redesigned 2012 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is revealed in a variety of new photos, ahead of its summer launch in Europe — but there are still no plans for the American market.
Earlier this year, a spokesperson for VW of America told Inside Line that the Golf Cabrio "is not slated to come to the U.S. We're focused on our all-new 2012 Eos and an upcoming Beetle Cabrio for the U.S. market."
The new two-door four-passenger Golf Cabrio is 8 inches shorter than the Eos and comes with a power-operated fabric top with a heated rear window.
European customers can choose from four-cylinder gasoline and turbodiesel engines, ranging in output from 104 to 208 horsepower. Transmission choices include five- and six-speed manuals, as well as six- and seven-speed DSG automatics.
Prices in Germany will start from around $35,000.
Inside Line says: Definitely a looker and a bit less of a "chick car" in this iteration.

Anyone who casts aspersions on the Eos forgets the honor you get when this crapwagen breaks down...and does it again...and again....and again...

I don't know what is worse, dropping $36K on an EOS or $47k on that Nissan Murano droptop! Put solely those two side by side and the EOS looks much better.
I could snag a Mustang (V6 or maybe even a base GT) or a Camaro (2LT or maybe even a base 1SS) for that cash. Heck, I'd probably opt for a new 200 drop top before the EOS!

I agree that the Eos is ridiculously expensive, and excels at nothing besides helping its owner get a tan.

@ttbuyer....I was at a VW Dealer recently and they had an EOS in the showroom. I was APALLED when I saw it priced at $36K. FOR THAT?! I have to say that is probably the last car I would drop $36K on. You're talking a $12K premium over a GTI to get a less attractive car (subjective I know) with the retractible roof. I'd much rather get a sunroof and pocket the extra $10K and get a used Miata. lol

$35K for THAT?
I guess VW simply can't help settting the automotive world on fire with value and innovation.

Less of a chick car but still kind of a chick car.

Could it really be? A VW Cabrio that doesn't look strictly like a chick car! Put a little GTI package on and this thing would be pretty sweet.

The Eos and Beetle Cabriolet combined did not even sell 1,000 units per month over the past two years - they totaled less than 5% of VW sales.
Maybe VW should try the Golf Cabrio - it's not like they will mess up a good thing. They don't have a good thing to mess up.

Not only is there no Scirocco w/ 4 motion but there is no Scirocco in the US at all. Teasing the Golf? That's a joke. Just like buying something from the company that killed the GX3. For the life of me I don't understand the claims of VW 'quality'. Every VW I see and touch feels terrible w/ horrible fit and finish, not to mention the pricing and poor reliability! I really don't get the appeal. This isn't your 70's, early 80's VW anymore.

I like this better than the Eos even though it looks pretty similar. The Eos just seems like it would be better as an Audi.
