NEW YORK — The 2010 Volkswagen Golf and GTI made their U.S. debuts at the 2009 New York Auto Show on Wednesday, giving anxious consumers more information on how they can spec out each car. The two go on sale here in the fall.

For 2010, the VW Golf will be available with the optional 2.0-liter inline-4 TDI clean diesel engine, which produces 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It is the same one used in the Volkswagen Jetta. The Golf TDI has a choice of either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic with DSG. Golf TDI options include a power sunroof, Cold Weather package with heated seats, Bluetooth and a navigation system.

    The base 2010 Golf gets a 170-hp 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission.

Volkswagen has killed off the Rabbit nameplate and revived the Golf nameplate for the 2010 model year.

Volkswagen said the 2010 GTI will be available in four trim levels in the U.S. They are the two-door GTI and GTI Autobahn and the four-door GTI and GTI Autobahn. The GTI gets a standard 200-hp 2.0-liter FSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It is mated to a standard six-speed transmission or an optional six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.
