It's yet another addition to the ever-growing family of Golf derivatives. There's the Golf, the GolfPlus, the CrossGolf, the Touran and the Jetta, all based on the fifth-generation Golf. Recently departed Volkswagen Chief Wolfgang Bernhard did his best to create as many niche models as possible as a way to meet the needs of many types of consumers while minimizing costs.

The newest model, named the Golf Variant, is a stylish wagon with a 24-cubic-foot luggage compartment that can be increased to 54 cubes when the rear seats are folded. Not bad for a 196.8-inch-long car. At launch there will be four engine options: two gasoline engines that make 102 and 140 hp and two diesels with 105 and 140 hp.

Rumor has it that the Golf Variant will be sold as the Jetta wagon, possibly beginning this summer.

What this means to you: Volkswagen's niche-model strategy pays off for wagon lovers.
