"To qualify for a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of 'Good' in the Institute's front, side and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control," said the IIHS in a statement. "Criteria to win are tough because the award is intended to drive continued safety improvements such as top crash test ratings and the rapid addition of electronic stability control, which is standard on the CC."
The 2009 Volkswagen CC earned a four-star rating out of a possible five stars in front crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It earned a five-star rating in side driver crash tests by the government and a four-star rating for rear seat crashes. It also earned a four-star rollover rating.
