March, 1998 -- Yet another German lost its top at the Geneva International Auto Show, as the latest version of Volkswagens Cabrio was introduced this week. This favorite of college kids across America is based on the recently redesigned VW Golf that was introduced in Frankfurt in 1997.
Following recent trends in automotive design, the Cabrio receives admirably high levels of standard safety equipment such as dual front airbags, side-impact airbags, anti-lock brakes, and an integrated rollover protection system. This puts the Cabrio on the same safety equipment level as the acclaimed Mercedes-Benz SLK.
The engine lineup has not yet been determined for the United States, but we can guess that the motors will be roughly equivalent to what is currently being offered in the Golf, with a GTi-type model possibly in the works.
