For 2009, the RAV4 gets a redesigned 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 172 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The outgoing 2008 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 166 hp at 6,000 rpm and 165 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.
Toyota said the redesigned four-cylinder engine is mated to a new four-speed automatic transmission that is more lightweight and efficient than the previous four-speed. As of Wednesday, the EPA was only showing official 2009 fuel economy numbers for the RAV4 equipped with the optional 3.5-liter V6. The 2009 Toyota RAV4 2WD with the V6 returns 19 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway, it said.
Toyota said the 2009 RAV4 gets a revised grille and front bumper, along with redesigned taillamps. Perhaps the most striking exterior changes are found in the sport appearance package for '09, which features no signature spare tire on the rear hatch. The package equips the RAV4 with run-flat tires, Toyota said. It also bundles an AM/FM six-disc CD changer with six speakers, MP3/WMA playback capability and integrated XM Satellite Radio with a one-year extended complimentary service subscription. The package is available for the 4WD V6 RAV4, which starts at $27,135, including shipping.
