- Orders for the plug-in Toyota Prius begin on Friday, which is Earth Day.
- The catch is that Toyota has not yet released pricing for the 2013 Prius PHV.
- It goes on sale in spring 2012 in 15 launch states, with a nationwide rollout in 2013.
TORRANCE, California — Toyota has kicked off the ordering system for the Prius plug-in hybrid, announcing that prospective buyers can register for the car starting on Friday, which is Earth Day.
Toyota has set up a special Web site, where you can register your interest in the Prius PHV and have "first access to the online order system when it becomes available later in the year." Pricing for the 2013 Toyota Prius PHV has not yet been set, but Toyota has said it will cost $3,000-$5,000 more than a conventional Prius.
The pre-ordering system will allow customers to configure their vehicle, select a dealership in one of 15 launch states and track their order through production, distribution and delivery. The 15 launch states are Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. However, Toyota said its online ordering system will not be available in Hawaii.
The Prius PHV has a lithium-ion battery that enables all-electric operation at higher speeds and longer distances than the conventional Prius. Toyota said the Prius PHV provides electric-only driving for a maximum of approximately 13 miles. It describes the Prius PHV as "an anticipated 50 mpg-rated hybrid."
