Toyota Raises Prices on 2009 Prius, Camry Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid

    TORRANCE, California — The 2009 Toyota Prius will start at $22,720, including a $720 destination charge, a price increase of $500 over the 2008 model. The price increase will be effective on August 1, Toyota said.

    Expect the uplevel 2009 Prius Touring model to start at $24,990.

    The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid also gets a price hike of $500. The Camry hybrid will start at $26,870, including shipping. The new price will be effective on August 25.

    Toyota also increased pricing on its 2009 Highlander Hybrid by $518. The Highlander Hybrid will start at $35,445, including a $745 shipping charge, for the two-row, four-wheel-drive model. The uplevel Highlander Hybrid with three rows and four-wheel drive starts at $41,765, including shipping. Pricing on the Highlander Hybrid will be effective on August 25.

    The Japanese automaker bundled the news about the hybrid price increases with several other price increases late last week.

    The 2009 Toyota Corolla gets a price increase of $100. The base model with a five-speed manual transmission will start at $16,070, including a $720 shipping charge.

    The 2009 Toyota Matrix also gets a $100 price increase. The base 4x2 standard model with a five-speed transmission will start at $17,010, including a $720 shipping charge.

    The 2009 Toyota Camry gets a price bump of $225. The base '09 Camry four-cylinder with a five-speed manual transmission will start at $19,865, including a $720 shipping charge.

    The 2009 Toyota Avalon gets a price increase of $520. The base Avalon XL will start at $28,565, including a $720 shipping charge. Avalon pricing will take effect August 11.

    The 2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser gets a price increase of $275. The base 2009 FJ Cruiser starts at $24,065, including a $745 destination charge. The FJ Cruiser price change will take effect August 1.

    Toyota also announced that the 2009 Scion xD gets a price increase of $100, effective July 14. The manual-transmission xD starts at $15,320, including a $670 destination charge.

    What this means to you: Don't look for any price breaks on Toyota's hybrid vehicles — or its more conventional vehicles, either. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
