    Just the Facts:
    • No options — the updated Land Cruiser lands this month at U.S. dealers with everything standard.
    • The latest edition marks over 50 years in the U.S. and just celebrated its 60th birthday in Japan.
    • New standard hardware on the 2013 model includes rear-seat DVD entertainment system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, center-console cooler box, leather-trimmed steering wheel and heated second-row seats.

TORRANCE, California — The long-running Toyota Land Cruiser is about to get a modest face-lift — and a big bump in price. The 2013 model, which makes its North American debut next week at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show and arrives at Toyota dealers later this month, will be offered with zero options; all the stuff that used to cost extra now will come standard, as the big eight-passenger ute continues to march relentlessly upmarket.

The current 2011 Land Cruiser retails for just over $70,000. Toyota hasn't announced pricing on the 2013 model.

Exterior changes are modest and are limited mainly to a freshened grille, headlamps, mirrors and moldings. Updates to the cabin are equally subdued, and include ventilated front seats with perforated leather trim, heated steering wheel and dynamic radar cruise control.

The big change is the addition of numerous features that once cost extra, but now will be included as standard equipment. Among them: rear-seat DVD entertainment system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, center-console cooler box, headlamp cleaners, leather-trimmed steering wheel, multi-information display, hands-free controls, heated second-row seats, navigation and JBL premium audio.

While the Japanese domestic market edition gets a 315-horsepower 4.6-liter V8, its U.S. sib retains the 381-hp 5.7-liter unit.

Inside Line says: The latest Land Cruiser is light-years removed, in terms of styling, features and price, from the sturdy, yet humble original that was born 60 years ago in Japan.

"Toyota hasn't announced pricing on the 2013 model."

Actually, IL, they have.  According to a press release on Toyota's site from all the way back on January 6th, they announced an MSRP of $77,995

I love the Land Cruiser, but for $70,000 it should have the 4.5L twin turbo diesel V8 it has in the wrest of the world.  Otherwise this is one of my favorite new cars and I'm very happy Toyota still sells it here.

The 2011 base price is $68,920. That is about a 6k difference from when this generation came out in 2008. And the current base price is only about 4k off the original base price at the start of the current generation:LX570.

My point is that at this rate of yearly base price increase that the Land Cruiser has been doing (along with the LX570), you might as well get rid of the Land Crusier and keep the LX and make the Sequoia instead of the Land Cruiser. 1.Its ugly. 2. Its over-priced when there is an almost identical option for around the same price 3. For these reasons, I never see the Land Crusier on the road. (and the closest thing I see is the LX).

I think that Toyota needs to re-think the Land Crusier.

How can you make the first statement when pricing hasn't even been announced?

Also, it's ridiculous that Toyota even still sells these things in the U.S. when they have the Sequoia for thousands less.

I like the exterior updates. I hope they offer ventilated seats now. A vehicle over $70k without ventilated seats is a joke.

It appears that they've gone with 20" wheels to replace the 18" ones. I'd want 18" to be able to put more off-road oriented tires on it. Not that I'd ever own one of these.

I've always loved Land Cruisers, but man, the price is ridiculous.

Toyota's use of bulging headlights and tailights is pretty ugly on regular cars, and down right stupid on an "off-road" vehicle where lights should be protected from damage.
